Let's face it, we spend most of our day to day on our phone. During our commute, walking, driving, watching TV, eating dinner. Our attention is in high demand and our digital devices lure us in with the soft glow, beatiful conturs and promises of greater things.
T-Mobile asked Hello Monday to concept a way to help people be connected. Not digitally connected but in real life connected. How do we get people to be truly present with one another?
The design team concepted the Nomo (No One Missing Out) device to be an experience that rewards it's players for being offline the longest. You can learn more about the project on their case study.
Since this was a family friendly device and intended to be playful, the motion design needed to suit that tone and all the use cases.
We surfaced the delight and fun filled tone through all of the UI elements. Bringin bouncy animations, and dramatic acting to elements that would typically be expected to act "normal" or vanilla.
One of my favorite aspects of this was finding the right balance of play and function. Certain things like transitions between surfaces just needed to feel familiar, while it was okay to take foreign icons and animate them in novel ways. This adds delight and reinforce the gaming aspects of the experience.
I'm super proud of the amount of expression we were able to get out of the shapes face. The dramatic sad face is my favorite.

The little device that sets you free.

To make the NOMO feel more family friendly, I exaggerated the motion design. A lot of overshoots and big timing gaps in between moments. Overstating the movements makes the product feel a bit more “round” and lot more like a fat crayon and less of a micron pen.
I built out the system animations to feel utilitarian and familiar so that they wouldn’t distract from usability. This approach gives space to the more branded moments to stand tall and make the device joyful to use.
